About Me

My name is Jessica Fowler and I am currently a BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design student, specialising in Costume Interpretation. In my time on the course I have developed a passion for tailoring and am drawn to anything that presents a challenge!
My love of sewing, film and all things creative was forged at a young age when I spent hours drawing, painting and sewing under the knowledgable guidance of my biggest creative influence, my Nan.
My first 'clients' at this age were peg dolls for whom I made a stage (to rival that of any West- End theatre!) along with an array of costumes for them to perform in. Who knew I was foreshadowing my own career?
On leaving Secondary School, I Studied BTEC Performing Arts where I rediscovered my interest in theatrical costume, designing set and costume for a production of "Top Girls" by Caryl Churchill. I then went on to be put in charge of the Costume 'Department', eventually curating and sourcing the costumes for our company devised Final Major Project, "Welcome to Cresswood Moor" in 2015.
Studying Costume and Performance design at Arts University Bournemouth allowed me to learn and develop a wealth of valuable skills that have made me stronger and more confident, both as a Costume Interpreter and as a member of a team. Over my time on the course, I have encountered a few specialist skills such as draping on the stand for both male and female, pattern matching and working with difficult fabrics that have already proved to be useful.
I have previously had work experience at the Oxford Playhouse Theatre for Jack and the Beanstalk (November, 2017) and Poole Lighthouse Theatre for Cinderella (December, 2017) to be detailed in my blog which you can find here.
Other skills I have experience with include:
  • Savile Row traditional tailoring techniques
  • Corsetry
  • Measuring and pattern drafting
  • Alterations
  • Identifying period fashions and silhouettes
  • Working with fur
  • Millinery
  • Problem solving
  • Teamwork
  • Styling/ curating a costume
  • Modelmaking and Costume/ Set design
